A Carbon County man was sentenced to a prison term on Thursday after pleading guilty in a domestic assault case in which the presiding judge rejected a request for a probation term.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Martin George Hodge II, 34, ofAlbrightsville, Towamensing Township, to serve three to one day less 24 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of simple assault.In exchange for the plea the district attorney's office dropped two counts of aggravated assault, and one count each of simple assault and endangering the welfare of children and two counts of harassment.On June 4, state police at Fern Ridge responded to Hodge's residence for a reported domestic assault. On scene, troopers learned that Hodge had assaulted his long-term live-in girlfriend. While he assaulted the woman, one of their children was present.Hodge told Serfass, "I'm not proud of what I did."He said he has struggled with alcohol abuse and is trying to address it now.The victim told Serfass that Hodge was trying to get help for his problem and that she and Hodge were trying to "rebuild our family."Serfass said he was not going along with the stipulation, which stated a probation term was not opposed by the prosecution.He said, "The victim suffered serious injuries."He added that one of their children was present for the incident and observed a "rather brutal attack," which will have an "impact on his life."In addition to the prison term, which began immediately, Hodge was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render 100 hours of community service when released on parole, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.He was given credit for 12 days spent in prison on the charges.
