Four people involved in traffic stops along Interstate 80 in Carbon County entered guilty pleas on Monday in the county court to drug-related charges.

State police at Fern Ridge routinely patrol the interstate road in Carbon County - in Kidder Township and East Side Borough - which has resulted in numerous arrests for illegal drugs and drunken driving.Kyle Joseph Anderson, 25, of Philadelphia, was stopped on April 9 in East Side Borough for a traffic violation. Troopers suspected criminal activity and a K-9 unit was called to the scene and identified drugs present in the vehicle. Troopers found 20 bags of cocaine weighing about 18 grams.Anderson pleaded to one count each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance, with the amount of cocaine reduce to less than an ounce. Six other charges were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.Judge Joseph J. Matika, who accepted the pleas, told Anderson that although a plea agreement with the DA's office calls for a sentence of 12 to 24 months, which is in the mitigated range, that state sentencing guidelines in the standard range call for a minimum of between 21 and 27 months.Matika said he was not a party to the plea agreement and can impose any sentence he feels is appropriate.Anderson is currently an inmate in the county prison. It was also noted that he had two pending criminal cases in Philadelphia, which has a detainer on him.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Eric Gordon Brandon, 47, of Syracuse, New York, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on March 31, 2015, in East Side Borough. Troopers suspected criminal activity and a K-9 unit was called to the scene and identified illegal drugs in the vehicle. There were other passengers in the car but Brandon took responsibility for the five pounds of marijuana found.He pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver.Matika sentenced him to serve three to one day less 24 months in the county prison with credit for 23 days already served.He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render 75 hours of community service and supply a DNA sample.He will report to the county prison at noon Jan. 3, 2017, to begin serving his prison term.David M. Sewell, 35, of South Williamsport was stopped on March 7 in East Side Borough. A K-9 unit found marijuana in the car.He pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia in a plea agreement with a charge of possession dropped.He is currently an inmate in the Philadelphia prison system facing a probation violation.Matika sentenced him to serve three to six months in the county prison effective immediately.Upon completion of his minimum he will be returned to Philadelphia.Michael O. Jackson, 41, of Philadelphia, fared the best out of the four defendants. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on April 9 in East Side Borough. Found in the vehicle was heroin.He pleaded to one count of disorderly conduct as a summary offense. In a plea bargain 10 other counts were dropped, including possession with intent to deliver, possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence and summary offenses all dropped. He has been in the county prison for the past 248 days.Matika imposed a fine of $150. In was noted Jackson will not be released from custody as the state board of parole has a detainer on him for a parole violation.The defendants sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee if on probation or parole.
