State police at Fern Ridge have made numerous arrests involving illegal substances and drunken driving along Interstate 80 in Carbon County over the years. This week in the county court, four defendants in vehicle stops along I-80 entered guilty pleas before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Drug casesAdrian Vega-Caba, 25, of West Hazleton pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was stopped on Nov. 4, 2016, in East Side borough for traffic violations. At the stop he was found to have marijuana in his vehicle. In exchange for the plea, the district attorney's office dropped six other drug counts.It was noted he recently pleaded guilty in Luzerne County court to a count of possession with intent to deliver with sentencing deferred.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Anthony Michael Gutierrez, 25, of Hoboken, New Jersey, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. A count of possession of a small amount of marijuana was dropped in a plea bargain.He was stopped on Sept. 2, 2016, at the Carbon/Luzerne line.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he render 25 hours of community service.DUI casesScott Allen Coll, 46, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence.He was stopped on Aug. 26 in Kidder Township. A test revealed a 0.13 BAC.A first offense, he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Daniel Adam Kopey, 32, of South Williamsport, pleaded to one count of DUI.He was stopped on Sept. 18, 2016, in Kidder Township. A test revealed a 0.19 BAC.Sentencing was deferred so Kopey can obtain a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation.Gutierrez and Coll also must pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee.
