Northern Lehigh HS cheerleader mourned

Olivia Rodriguez had a glowing personality and radiant smile big enough to light up a room.

On top of that, she could shout out cheers and pounce on the volleyball court with the best of them.Though only in her sophomore year at Northern Lehigh High School, it was evident Olivia touched many lives.Sadly, Olivia passed away Thursday morning at the age of 15 following complications from an apparent asthma attack.Olivia's death has left a huge void not only among her family and friends, but the community as a whole, said cheerleading coach Tanya Kromer."She was a really outgoing girl, and everybody really loved having her on the team," Kromer said. "We're really going to miss her a lot."Coach Megan Filchner echoed Kromer's sentiment."She was always that one person that was constantly upbeat, she was always happy, always had a smile on her face, she never had any negativity to her," Filchner said. "She was one of those kind of people if something went wrong, you could talk to her."Filchner said Olivia, who lived in Slatington, had an uplifting personality."She was just an outgoing, bubbly personality," she said. "She was well-loved throughout the school, as well as (with) her teammates."Standout cheerleader, volleyball playerBoth Kromer and Filchner said Olivia did well for herself as a cheerleader. The coaches said Olivia tried out for cheerleading last May, and cheered junior varsity squad during the football season. She was then elevated to the varsity squad for basketball season, the coaches said. Both acknowledged that her father, Juan, was a huge supporter of his daughter, and was a big help to the team.Though Northern Lehigh doesn't have its own volleyball program, Olivia played for the East Coast Power select team, and was very good at it, the coaches said. When she wasn't cheering or playing volleyball, her coaches said she spent time with her boyfriend, Jayden, who is also a sophomore in the district.Tragedy strikesFilchner said they received notification the morning of Dec. 23 that Olivia had a severe asthma attack, and had to be hospitalized."We were notified by a couple of friends, and we told our girls that she was in the hospital," she said. "They immediately wanted to go see her."Filchner said the cheerleading team was informed by Olivia's father that they could see her Dec. 23 and 24."She was not awake," she said. "We could talk to her and see her, but that was all."After a weeklong battle, Olivia succumbed.Community steps upKromer said that as recently as Thursday, a bake sale was held during the boys' basketball game with the hope that Olivia would be able to recover. However, it was during the bake sale that Olivia's father notified them that Olivia had passed away."We continued on with her bake sale, even though she was no longer with us," she said. "We continued to help the family."Through a combination of the bake sale, along with donations collected throughout the basketball games, Kromer said they were able to raise over $2,000 to help Olivia's family with their expenses."We did really well," she said. "The community really came together to support us."There are donation buckets at Mama's Pizza and the American Legion in Slatington as well.Filchner also acknowledged the contributions of Lehighton, Palmerton and Jim Thorpe school districts for their contributions. She said the Lehighton boys' basketball team and cheerleading squad brought them arrangements of purple flowers, wore purple bows on their uniforms, and held a moment of silence.Moving forwardKromer acknowledged that the loss of Olivia has hit the team hard.As a result, arrangements were made and the group went to Mama's Pizza for a team dinner on Wednesday to get some pizza, hang out and be together."The girls are really coming together. It's not easy to keep over 20 teenage girls happy," she said. "They're trying to take care of each other."Like everyone, both Kromer and Filchner said they are taking things one day at a time.Counselors will be available for students when school resumes on Tuesday, they said.
