Zachary Zehner earns Eagle Scout honor

Zachary Zehner of Lehighton was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor ceremony on Sept. 25.

Zachary attained the rank with Boy Scout Troop 82 of Lehighton led by Scot Wingert. He was a member of Boy Scouts for 10 years.Zachary completed 21 merit badges in a variety of subject areas as well as his Eagle Scout project, which was constructing three picnic tables along the Sgt. Stanley J. Hoffman Boulevard entering Lehighton. The picnic tables will be used in a future park that is proposed at the site.Zehner also prepared the ground at the site for the tables as part of his project.In total, he spent 120.5 hours on the project.The Court of Honor took place at Trinity Lutheran Church, the sponsor of Troop 82.State Rep. Doyle Heffley presented Zachary with a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol Building and a citation from the House of Representatives.Other presentations were made by Carbon County Commissioner William O'Gurek; Mayor Thomas Mase of Lehighton; Duane Reichard, Boy Scout representative; and Shawn Keiser of Trinity Lutheran Church.Mark Hoffman of the Shade Tree Commission and beneficiary of Zachary's project spoke of how he thought putting tables at the bypass would welcome visitors and the community of Lehighton.Master of ceremonies was Bryan Buffington, Lehighton Area High School's band director.Scoutmaster Wingert conducted the presentation of the Eagle badge.Zachary's grandmother had the honor of pinning him with his Eagle medal.Zachary shared some of his scouting memories and presented special gifts to some people. He gave his grandmother, Susan Solt; his aunt Melissa Christman; and Sue Eckhart, who was his Cub Scout leader through the years, bouquets of flowers. He also gave a bouquet of flowers and a gift certificate to Judy Wingert, his Eagle Scout coordinator. He presented his scoutmaster with a plaque and a mentor pin. Zachary's grandfather, David Solt, and parent coordinator Ed Kroboth also received mentor pins.Zachary thanked Lowe's, Slaw's and Ziegenfus Coal and Stone for their donations toward his Eagle project.
