Nesquehoning officials are working to correct an issue that the state pointed out regarding a portion of road located on the edge of the Hauto Valley Estates portion of the borough.

On Wednesday, borough council voted to adopt an ordinance accepting the deeds of dedication for the portion of Industrial Road from the intersection of Route 54 to the turnaround, which then will list the road as public instead of private, as it apparently stands now.This was brought to the borough's attention recently that the state's records still list that portion of the road as private, even though the road was dedicated over to the borough from Kovatch and the Development Authority years ago, borough Secretary-Treasurer RoniSue Ahner said."We aren't getting any liquid fuels for it," Ahner said.The ordinance accepting the deeds of dedication should resolve the issue, council said.PreparednessNesquehoning Emergency Management Coordinator John McArdle reminded residents to check batteries in smoke detectors and CO alarms to ensure their safety this winter.He also asked that residents who have fire hydrants near their property to please clear away any snow that falls this winter at least 3 feet around the hydrant, as well as any snow on the hydrant. This helps firefighters when minutes count.McArdle also reminded everyone with real Christmas trees to keep them watered during the holiday season.Trees can burn quickly if they catch fire and are dry.Other businessIn other matters, council discussed or acted on the following items:• Approved the 2017 meeting schedule. Council meetings will take place at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month except for November and December, when the meetings will be held the third Wednesday of the month. Council workshop meetings will be held at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month from January through October.• Mayor Sam Kitchko announced that for the month of November, police collected $2,572.70; issued 31 citations, had a total of 441 incidents reported in the borough and drove 3,877 miles while on patrol.• Hired Rose Chapello full time in the sewer department, effective Saturday. Chapello had been working on a probationary period in the department.• Ratified action taken by council with regards to the installation of two HVAC units at the recreation center by K.M. Sency of Weatherly at a cost of $11,000. The recreation commission and borough will split the cost.• The next Nesquehoning Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 in the borough hall. All are welcome to attend.
