"People just don't dance enough these days," says Lynda Stewart, a volunteer at Paul's House in Jonas. "So why not combine dancing and fundraising and give people in the community an opportunity for a good night out."

Stewart and some of the other volunteers at Valor Clinic decided to combine their love of a good evening of dancing and frivolity and mix it with an opportunity to honor the military and raise money to benefit the homeless veterans that call Paul's House at Valor home.Saturday night about 100 people gathered at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert to re-create an evening at the USO. Some of the guests arrived in World War I and World War II uniforms and the ladies were decked out in fur stoles and netted hats. Everyone had a dance card and paid the DJ a dollar a dance.Guests paid $10 per person, and money collected from a basket raffle and the dance cards were all donated to Valor. Stewart hoped to raise more than $1,500."Dance is life," Stewart said. "I really hope that next time we can move this up a decade and maybe do something that is '50s or '60s themed."Stewart was very grateful to all of the businesses that donated food, soft drinks and door prizes for the event.Some of the sponsors were DJ Hammertime, Bill's ShopRite, Weis Market, Kinsley's ShopRite, Giant, Dale's Pocono Bistro, Spinelli's Pizza, Cooks Corner Family Restaurant, The Landmark Cafe and Pocono Produce. Camelback Resort - Aquatopia also made a donation."We can't do what we do without our volunteers and the charity of others," Valor founder Mark Ballas said. "We are just a small, grass-roots organization. We couldn't survive without help like this."Valor Clinic Foundation just celebrated its fifth anniversary. Ballas said 60 homeless veterans have passed through Paul's House."Of those 60 men, 57 are still off the street," Ballas said. "That is well above the national average. And if we could just beat the grip of addiction, that number would be 100 percent."Valor does more than just operate Paul's House in the former Hotel Jonas. Each month the group holds "stand downs" in Stroudsburg and Scranton to deliver food, clothing and supplies to the homeless. The volunteers also pack and deliver holiday food baskets to the homes of veterans who are down on their luck and need a helping hand.Valor Clinic Foundation is currently in the process of opening a second home in Ohio.The evening ended with all of the guests on the dance floor, holding hands and listening to Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA.""It truly doesn't get any better than that," said Stewart.
