2017 Primary election: Schuylkill County

There are few local races for Schuylkill County voters to choose from for the May primary on Tuesday.

The race for the Republican nomination for mayor in Tamaqua highlights the very light list.Following is a rundown of the offices up for election in the Times News coverage area.TamaquaIncumbent Democratic Mayor Christian Morrison has decided not to seek another four-year term. No Democrat has filed a nominating petition so the new mayor will likely be a Republican, unless a write-in campaign is conducted by someone to get the Democratic nod.Three people have filed for the Republican nomination for mayor, and all are newcomers to the political scene in the borough.Seeking the position are Nathan J. Gerace, William F. Price Sr. and Christine Rottet Hartung.There is also a race for a GOP nomination for council, four-year term. There are three to be elected, with four Republicans filing. The candidates are Kerry Lasky, Michael E. Morgans, Ritchie A. Linkhorst and Dave D. Mace. The lone Democrat is James E. Hull.Incumbent tax collector Pamela J. McCullion is the lone candidate for the GOP nod with no Democrats filing.CoaldaleIn the mayor race, Herb Whildin is the lone Republican candidate for the four-year term. No Democrats are listed on the ballot.For council there are three seats up, four-year terms. The Republicans filing are Harry R. Hontz Jr., Anne Girard and Joel Johnson. The lone Democrat is Angela Krapf.Incumbent Democrat Catherine M. Papesh is unopposed for her party's nomination while there are no Republican candidates.Rush TownshipThere are no races in Rush Township.Incumbent Republican supervisor Jeaninne Motroni is the only name on the ballot for either party for the six-year term. Republican Michelle Kabilko is the lone candidate for tax collector.Schuylkill TownshipThere is a race for the Republican nomination for a six-year term on the board of supervisors. The candidates are Charles A. Hosler and Anthony J. Zawada. No Democrats have filed. Republican Paul Delpais is the lone candidate for tax collector.Walker TownshipIn Walker Township there is a supervisor seat, six-year term, and one for two years up for election. Incumbent Republican Craig Wagner is the lone candidate for the six-year term and Democrat Christine M. Troxell is the lone candidate for the two-year term. Republican Diane Y. Malay is the lone candidate on the ballot for tax collector.West Penn TownshipThere is a seat on the board of supervisors, six-year term. Lawrence J. Stival is the lone Democrat running. Seeking the GOP nod are Dave Frederick and Randy Troxell. The winner will face Stival in the fall.Republican Helene V. Zeigler is the lone candidate for tax collector.New RinggoldIn New Ringgold Democrat John Belsak is the lone candidate for mayor as is Republican Corrianne Meyers for tax collector. There are two seats up for council with Roger Freed seeking the Democratic nod and Jason Gradwell the GOP.McAdooIn McAdoo Democrat Robert S. Wills is the lone candidate for a four-year term as mayor and Democrat Andrew T. DeBalko the same for tax collector.There are three seats open, four-year terms. for council. Three Democrats, Peter P. Minneci, Clara Preputnick and John J. Shigo are the only candidates on that side of the ballot with Edward J. Bielen Sr. the lone Republican.Delano TownshipThere are no races in Delano Township. Democrat Jay Ryan is the lone candidate for a six-year supervisor term and Democrat Ann Pascavage is the lone candidate for tax collector.Mahanoy CityThere will be a race for mayor in Mahanoy City in the fall but not the primary.Incumbent Democrat Patricia Schnitzius is seeking her party's nod for another term. She will face off against Republican Dennis Wiessner in the fall.There are three seats up on council, four-year terms, with four Democrats running. They are Louis Huber, Thomas C. McCabe, Scott Kline and Thom Maziekas. There is a two-year term council seat up with Democrat Patricia Mullins the lone candidate on the ballot.There are no GOP candidates. Democrat Teckla A. McCabe is the lone candidate for tax collector.MiddleportRepublican John Leshko is the one candidate for mayor in Middleport. Candidates for council, in which three seats are up for election, include Democrats Joseph A. Bolenaitis and John R. DiFilippo Jr.; and on the GOP side Wendy Dempsey. Democrat Marian Donlin is the lone candidate for tax collector.Blythe TownshipThere is a race for the Democrat nomination for six-year term supervisor between Chris Wallace and Albert J. Lubinsky. There are no GOP candidates. Democrat Joan M. Dranginis is the lone candidate for tax collector.New PhiladelphiaIn New Philadelphia borough incumbent Democrat Frances C. Tkach is the lone candidate for mayor. There are four seats up for election to council. Democrats seeking the nominations include Elizabeth Benulis and Christine Carey with Robert J. Frantz for tax collector. There are no Republicans on the ballot for council or tax collector.Kline TownshipOnly Republicans are seeking the office of supervisor and tax collector in Kline Township. For supervisor is Matthew P. Corra Sr. and tax collector Stephen J. Sheer.All the municipalities listed also have offices of inspector of election and auditor on the ballot.
