Matika to serve a total of 15 to 30 months in a state correctional institution followed by one year of state probation. He previously pleaded guilty in three pending cases. He pleaded to aggravated assault for the incident with the deputy, theft by deception, and criminal trespass. He was arrested on the assault count for an incident on Nov. 3, 2014, along East Patterson Street. Sheriff's deputies were attempting to arrest him on a warrant when he pulled a handgun from a bag and pointed at the deputies, who drew their weapons. A female, not identified, intervened by getting in front of Puppo and telling him to put the weapon down, which he did, and he was taken into custody. He was charged with the theft by deception charge by state police at Lehighton for taking money from a Towamensing Township family to do work at their residence and never did the work. The trespass incident occurred on Sept. 28, 2014, in Lansford. Two men entered a home in the borough seeking money. They fled when the two female residents yelled for help. Puppo was one of the males.Puppo admitted to a drug addiction problem and claimed he wants to enter an inpatient, long-term treatment program. Puppo said, "I let my addiction take over," saying he committed the crimes to pay for his habit. He added, "I want to do right."Matika told Puppo, "These type of charges go hand in hand with drug addiction." He added, "You're lucky Sgt. Bonner didn't shoot you." He added that his girlfriend saved his life. Matika said, "Now it's time for you to save your life."Matika also ordered Puppo to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, attend anger management counseling, make restitution of $500 in the theft case to the victim, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit for 210 days already spent in prison on the charges.
