Sawdust is to blame for a small fire at a Nesquehoning business Tuesday afternoon.

Fire crews around the area responded to a reported structure fire at Heritage Sign and Display on Industrial Road just after noon.Lt. Joseph Starosta of the Nesquehoning Hose Company said the dust collector at the business caught fire as a result of sawdust material, and the fire spread into the ceiling cross members against the wall in the back of the building.“I was told initially employees hit the fire with an extinguisher, but it only did so much,” he said. “Once we got there, we had smoke in the rear of the building.”Employees were evacuated while Nesquehoning fire crews extinguished the fire.Starosta said that the company’s sprinkler system “was a big part to saving that area of the building.”There was some reported damage to the dust collector and ceiling area as a result of the fire.No injuries were reported.Heritage officials were advised to hold off on restoring power to that area until an electrician checks out the junction boxes there, but the company should be able to operate the rest of the business, Starosta said.Responding to the scene were Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1, New Columbus, Hauto, Jim Thorpe, Lansford and Summit Hill fire departments, as well as Nesquehoning EMS.This is the second time a dust collector sparked a fire at the business in recent years.
