Coaldale councilman remembered for service

Coaldale councilman Steve Tenetylo, 90, passed away July 21. He was instrumental in the creation of the borough's Veteran's Memorial, dedicated in November 2009.

"We believe we have one of the most unique and beautiful memorials to be found in America," Tenetylo said during the dedication. "When we consider that Coaldale is first in the nation regarding per capita who served in World War II, the memorial is well-deserved."Tenetylo was one of those World War II veterans. A 1942 graduate of Coaldale High School, he served in the U.S. Navy's submarine service.Following his service to the country, he returned to Coaldale and worked as a heavy equipment operator in both the road construction industry and for Lehigh Asphalt. His health had declined in recent years, and he hadn't been able to attend a council meeting in more than a year.Council member Tom Keerans said that Tenetylo had long been an influential and caring member of the borough."I always admired his dedication to Coaldale, and it seemed like he was always volunteering his time and efforts," Keerans said. "He really did a lot for the community."Council President Angela Krapft agreed."The borough of Coaldale was lucky to have him serve as long as he did," she said. "Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to work with Steve on council, and my concerns are with his family."A son and daughter-in-law, Steven M. and Machel, live in Coaldale. Tenetylo also had two daughters: Susan, wife of Stephen Fegley, Hometown; and Ann Tentylo Krajcir, Nesquehoning. His wife, Helen M. (Pavlik) Tenetylo, died in 2009. He had six grandchildren and one-great granddaughter, and is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Roman and Mary Tenetylo, Harrisburg.Borough Solicitor Mike Greek said that council has 30 days to fill Tenetylo's seat. If council fails to fill the vacancy within the prescribed time limit, then the vacancy board has 15 additional days to fill the vacancy by appointing a qualified person. The vacancy board consists of council members and one registered voter of the borough who is appointed by council.
