Franklin Fire Company honors firefighters, fire police

They answer calls without being asked twice and offer assistance to other first responders. Many times, they leave their warm beds and hot meals behind to do so, often getting no recognition or thanks.

Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company members took time out of their busy schedules in February to celebrate the groups’ accomplishments including recognition of longtime members during the annual Firemens’ Valentines Dance.

Dale Ahner read a fireman’s prayer, and Assistant Chief Kevin Lilly offered a prayer of thanksgiving for the members who had the willingness and ability to serve. Chief Lynn Diehl emceed the program honoring its firefighters and fire police as he presented uniform shirts and service pins.

Diehl announced that many of the firefighters have 40-plus years of service and noted that Bob Mertz has joined this distinctive group as he was awarded his 40-year service pin during the evening’s program.

Mertz, in addition to serving as firefighter, organizes many of the fundraising dances held at the fire company and offers assistance in other ways including helping the auxiliary in their fundraising efforts.

Other firefighters who received pins for their years of service included: David Keiser, Tom Chew and Shawn Sheckler, 15 years; Jon Gula, 10 years; and Ken Meyer, 5 years.

In addition, fire policeman James Sandt was recognized for having served 5 years in that capacity.

Fire Company Line Officers who were also recognized include: Capt. Justin Smith; lieutenants Chris Hardy, Jon Gula, David Keiser and Tyler Helmer, and Engineer Chauncey Hearn.

Other firefighters recognized included: Bruce Wolfe, Todd Hawk, Eric Lilly, Austin Lilly, Debb Goodhile, Adam Pretko, Bart Blakesley, John Venuto, Dale Ahner, Mark Serfass, Corey Guerra, John Hofacker, Eric Beers, Juancarlos “JC” Fuentes, Clinton Hawk, Katia Hawk, Carl Bonser, Jacob Bonser, Jackie Bonser, Jeff Leighton, Shane Leighton, Cade Leighton, Drake Leighton, Tyler Unangst and Doug Endy.

Fire police who were lauded for their efforts, often staying on scene long after the firefighters leave, were: Capt. Francis Kresge, Lt. Tim Zimmerman, Sgt. Phil Nuccio, and Sgt. Barry Hoffman, along with members William Highland, Roxanne Stroup, Walter Achy and Gene Crostley.

Teamwork was stressed in the closing remarks offered by Chief Diehl. He noted that firefighters, fire police and auxiliary are all working together to serve the community and expressed his appreciation to all who support the fire company throughout the year. A big part of the joint effort remains in fundraising.

While the township provides a great deal of funding, the costs of maintenance, heat, equipment, etc., are tremendous. The cost to outfit a single firefighter is approximately $8,000.

In light of the fact that equipment and maintenance costs are high, many fundraising events are scheduled throughout the year. He thanked everyone in attendance who supported these efforts.
