Hunger walk
The fourth annual Tamaqua Community Hunger Walk will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, starting from the St. Luke's parking lot between Pine and Railroad streets. This is a new starting point from previous events. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m.A fellowship and celebration time at the Tamaqua Community Art Center immediately follows the walk. Individuals, organizations and businesses will be recognized for their work in the 2017 community hunger campaign.Last year's Hunger Walk raised $6,300 and collected 83 boxes of food that was split evenly between food pantries at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, Trinity United Church of Christ and Primitive Methodist Church. Registration and sponsorship forms are available online at
www.taff.org.The hunger walk is a project of the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the umbrella of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met May 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 56 members in attendance. President Bill Morrison conducted the business session. The inspirational reading "The Dawning of Springtime" was given by the chaplain.Birthday wishes were extended to Lorraine Lupcho, Joe St. Onge, Nancy Godanis, Neil Flexer and Jane McLaughin. Doris Yeager was added to the sick list.The group is planning a trip to the Country Cupboard on July 19. Plans are also being made for a boat trip on the "Hiawatha" in Williamsport.Members were reminded they would need to have STS Transportation cards to participate in any trips using STS buses as transportation.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. The next meeting will be held May 23. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Zion Stone ChurchZion Stone Church in West Penn Township will hold its first evening contemporary service on May 20, with Pastor Russell Campbell, in the social hall. Dress is casual. All are welcome. An old-fashioned church picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 30, at West Penn Park.Calvary ECThe Rev. Phillip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages is at 9:15 a.m.A free movie night will be offered on May 19, presenting the film "The Hiding Place." Rated PG, the story is about sisters who live in Poland as World War II looms. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.An Ascension Day service will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 25, at Frieden's Lutheran Church in New Ringgold.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church in Mantzville. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the Tamaqua Hunger Walk will be held at 2 p.m.; Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Next week's activities include: Tuesday, prayer group, 5 p.m., called to care committee, 6 p.m.; Wednesday, preschool graduation and moving up festivities, 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, cherub choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., senior choir practice, 7 p.m. A special Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. May 28.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school at 9:15 a.m.Next week's activities include: Monday, preschool moving up ceremony for 3-year-olds, at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, preschool graduation at 6 p.m. for the morning 4-year-old class; Wednesday, preschool graduation at 6 p.m. for the afternoon 4-year-old class.
