Pleasant Valley to hold online meeting

Pleasant Valley School Board will be meeting online for the first time tonight at 7. Residents can view the meeting through the digital platform Zoom. For those who cannot connect to Zoom, a video recording of the meeting will be on the school district’s website to view later.

On tonight’s agenda, the board is set to approve Lee Lesisko, the current director of technology at the school district, as the district’s new superintendent.

Acting Superintendent Charlene Brennan said the meeting was moved to the digital platform because of the stay-at-home order by the state for Monroe County and the prohibition against meetings of 10 people or more.

“This is our first attempt at holding a Board of Education meeting virtually,” she said. “Please be patient as we expect there to be some glitches. However, we will work through those with you.”

Residents will be able to connect to the meeting beginning at 6:45 p.m. by typing in https://zoom.us/j/885840803. Zoom is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and iOS. It can also be downloaded to a smartphone through the app that is available through Google or the App Store. A webcam is not needed to view the meeting or to ask questions.

Brennan said the school district prepared two instructional videos on how to download the Zoom application to a computer and join the meeting, and how to navigate within the meeting window after being connected.

“If you have never used Zoom before to meet virtually, we recommend that you review these two videos before the meeting. The videos can be found at www.pvbears.org,” she said. “These videos are not perfect, but we hope they will provide everyone with the basic information they need to get connected.”

Brennan also said that all viewers of the meeting will be muted upon entry to the meeting. If someone would like to ask a question during the two public comment periods, then he or she should click on “Participants” on the Zoom toolbar at the bottom of the screen. The participant’s window will open on the right where he or she will click on “Raise Hand.”

The host of the meeting will unmute the participant and ask him to state his name, address and make his comment. When he is done, he will be muted again. The participant should then go to the bottom of the window and click “Lower Hand.” The district’s video “Introduction to the Zoom Meeting Window” shows how to do this, she said.

If the computer or phone the participant is using has a camera, then this video ability will be enabled when a person enters the meeting, but this feature can be turned off. Brennan said the instructional videos made by the school district show how to turn off the camera.

If participants want to leave their cameras on, then the district asks that the cameras be positioned correctly so that they can see their faces clearly.

“Thank you for bearing with us during this unprecedented time,” Brennan said.
