First female commissioner honored

Nancy Shukaitis was honored for her service to both the community and to the environment at a recent League of Women Voters dinner held at the Inn at Pocono Manor.

The Justice Bell Award was presented to Shukaitis, in honor of her service as the first female Monroe county commissioner, and for her work as a leader in fighting, against overwhelming odds, to prevent the Tocks Island Dam Project. The Tocks Dam would have blocked a local section of the Delaware River to create a huge lake. The Delaware National Park as we know it would never have been created.Shukaitis, who was at the time a landowner in the area to be flooded, has often been quoted as saying that she wasn't a hero, but "just a housewife who got mad."Also attending the dinner were state Reps. Maureen Madden and Rosemary Brown, who both presented Shukaitis with certificates of appreciation, as did a representative from state Sen. Scavello's office.
