Carbon County Treasurer Ronald J. Sheehan, a Democrat,is seeking re-election to a fifth term of office.

Sheehan, 51, a lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe, is a son of the late John W. Sheehan and Shirley (O'Neill) Sheehan.A graduate of Jim Thorpe Area High School, he spent nine years in banking, working his way from bank teller to an officer's position.In 1992, Sheehan took a position as accountant/fiscal deputy in the Carbon County Controller's office.Since being elected treasurer in 2001, Sheehan has upgraded the computer system of both the license bureau and treasurer's revenuesystems. The treasurer's officeacts as the central bank for the county and issues hunting, dog, fishing, small games of chance and bingo licenses..A member of the Carbon County Retirement Board, he oversees the county employee retirement program. With a 103 percent funding ratio, it is ranked as one of the best-funded retirement accounts in the state.Sheehan said, "It was an exciting and challenging time serving as treasurer during the worst economic period since the Great Depression. Carbon County, through the diligence and commitment of its elected officials, department heads and employees, continued to provide services and kept the county fiscally sound during bad economic times. We are now poised for a great future."Sheehan was elected president of the County Treasurers' Association of Pennsylvania in 2012 and served as vice president for two years.Community contributions include: eight years on the Jim Thorpe Borough Council;past secretary of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame; past treasurer of the Mauch Chunk Historical Society; past president and treasurer of the Jim Thorpe Rotary Club; longtime member of the Jim Thorpe Lions Club; Jim Thorpe Borough's 50th Anniversary Committee and the "Jim Thorpe - Athlete of the Century" celebrations; charter member of the Carbon County Ancient Order of Hiberniansand a founder of the St. Patrick's Day Parade.Sheehan, honored as a "community hero" by the Mauch Chunk Trust Company in 2002,has been a member of the Carbon County Democratic Executive Committee for the past 30 years, eightas vice chairman.Sheehan is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jim Thorpe.
