Pleasant Valley's board of education passed a resolution for a property tax rebate at Thursday's meeting.
The 2016 rebate will be limited to real property taxes paid over the amount of $650.The rebate benefits the area's fixed-income senior citizens, with a household income limit of $18,500, and a maximum rebate amount of $500. Residents who earn below $6,500 would be eligible for a rebate of 100 percent over the initial $650. For each $500 increase in household income $6,501 and over, up to $10,000, there is a 10 percent reduction in the allowable rebate. Incomes between $10,001 and $11,000 receive 35 percent, and there is a 10 percent reduction in the allowable rate for each $1,000 increase leading up to $15,000. Incomes between $15,001 and $18,500 have an allowed rate of 10 percent. For example, if you happened to earn $10,000 a year and were eligible for the rebate, and had paid $100 over the $650 minimum, you would receive a rebate of $40.Rebate claims may be filed no earlier than Feb. 1, 2017, and must be filed by June 1, 2017. Claims must include "reasonable proof of household income, the size and nature of the property claimed as a homestead and the tax receipt, or other proof that the real property taxes on the homestead have been paid."
