Lansford borough is seeking nearly $1.5 million in grants from the popular Local Share Account grant program.

Two of the three projects are led by nonprofit groups in the borough. But they can't apply to the LSA without approval from their municipality.Borough council voted Monday night to approve three applications for LSA grants, which are derived from casino gambling revenue from Mount Airy.The largest request is $950,000 for the reconstruction and renovation of the Lansford Borough Pool. A nonprofit called Friends of the Lansford Pool is working to raise money to reopen the facility, which has been closed since 2015.The pool was built in 1941 and hasn't seen a major update in 35 years.Councilwoman Rose Mary Cannon said that the grant request does not reflect the actual price of renovating the pool. A feasibility study on the pool is currently underway.Another nonprofit, Lansford Alive!, is seeking $179,025 in grant funds in order to remove and replace streetlights, and do associated utility work, along West Ridge Street between Tunnel and Coal streets.Finally, the borough approved their own application, for a $309,260, to build a new borough garage.The Monroe LSA grant program is open to municipalities in Monroe County and the five surrounding counties - Carbon, Lackawanna, Northampton, Pike and Wayne. It attracts dozens of applications each year.The deadline to apply for the grants is Sept. 30. The recipients are announced in July.
