The next meeting of the Nesquehoning Historical Society will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesdayat the borough hall building, located at 114 W. Catawissa St. Nesquehoning.

The group will be voting on a new panel of officers and board members. The following nominations were unanimously approved at the October meeting: Professor Joseph Roman Jr. as president, Tim Sverduk as vice president, Mary Fox as secretary, Grace Gilkeson as treasurer and Lois Corby Kuba, Deb Nevenglosky and Helen Applegate as three members of the board of directors.All members are encouraged to attend for this business.There will also be a special guest presenter, Regina R. Drasher, who will be re-enacting the role of "Big Mary" Septak."Big Mary" was a Slovak woman who became a folk hero in the budding union movement among coal miners following the Lattimer Mine Massacre of Sept. 10, 1897, in Hazleton.Drasher, who is herself a descendant of miners, grew up listening to coal region stories. She discovered "Big Mary" 15 years ago and has dedicated herself to keeping alive the memory of the role that was played by this unique and courageous woman.Drasher has portrayed "Big Mary" in multiple history-themed venues throughout the coal region.Drasher has been volunteering at Eckley Miner's Village since 1989, along with her son, Sgt. William S. Drasher, USMC/USAR. She has also written numerous plays, articles and poetry about the coal region.Everyone is invited to attend. Light refreshments will also be served.
