DJ rescues New Year's celebration

What's a New Year's Eve celebration without music and dancing?

It looked like that was going to be the case for residents of the Tamaqua ABC High Rise and their family and friends, who had been looking forward to their annual party in the facility's common room. The DJ they'd hoped to book for the event was unavailable, and it seemed that they couldn't find anyone else. But with the clock ticking down to the end of 2014, one of the residents rescued the event.Debbie Paisley, a resident of the High Rise for two years, put together a program of songs and karaoke just in time."I found out that they didn't have anybody and I wanted to give them a nice night," Paisley said. "It's (being a DJ) a hobby I like to do in my spare time; and I was up until about four in the morning yesterday getting ready.""Fortunately, I love all music and especially the music from the 50s and 60s, including country," she added, as several couples swayed to a Brenda Lee hit, Sweet Nothings. "And there are also those songs that never fail to get people on their feet and dancing."Some of those songs included "Achy Breaky Heart," "Hot Stuff," "Staying Alive" and "YMCA."When the familiar opening notes of YMCA began, the dance floor filled with a group of youngsters, including Davin Mace, Callista Fannock, Makayla Kester and Zachary McGlinchey."My mom lives here and we come out during the year for bingo and other events," said Kelly McGlinchey, Zachary's mom. "This is a really nice community of people we've gotten to know, and it was so nice of Debbie to volunteer so they would have entertainment."A few minutes before the focus of the New Year's celebration shifted to outdoor events, Kaylawna Torres, 6, Schuylkill Haven, sang the theme song for the movie Frozen, drawing lots of enthusiastic applause. Torres was attending the event with her great aunt, Mary Stine of Tamaqua."New Year's Eve is great in Tamaqua," Stine said. "There's something for every generation."
