A Lehighton teenager has plenty of reason to be proud of his Eagle Scout project.

Zachary Shiner, a seven year member of Lehighton Boy Scout Troop 82, took on the project to carve out a retreat for the community at Baer Memorial Park.With his organizational skills set on high, Shiner's project was completed in an efficient fashion. The project included replacing two picnic tables that were rotted beyond repair with two pre-stressed concrete picnic tables with wood tops, a park bench and a charcoal grill. The area was graded and gravel was laid to level the picnic area and prevent water puddling at the site.Shiner was assisted with the project by a team of other scouts and parents. The project was overseen by Tom Evans, Lehighton recreation director, who suggested the project after Evans was asked for his input.JR Slaw Construction, West Bowmans, quickly came on board and donated one complete table assembly.Shiner said that the area floods, which may be one of the reasons why the old tables were so badly deteriorated. Since the new tables are constructed of pre-stressed cement, they will last a long time without maintenance. The project was completed last October."Having JR Slaw Construction donate one of the tables was a huge donation," said Shiner. Shiner was also assisted by Seltzer Landscaping, Franklin Township, who donated their dump truck and heavy equipment to assist with preparing the site and the Service Team, Towamensing Township donated the use of an auger.Shiner said the area was lined with a weed block to cut down on maintenance.Shine has been active in Scouting for 12 years, beginning in Cub Pack 187. Boy Scout Troop 82 is under the leadership of Scoutmaster Scot Wingert. The troop is sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church, Lehighton.Zachary attained the rank of Eagle Scout on April 5. He is the sixth scout to attain the rank in recent months from Troop 82.Shiner has earned 25 merit badges, 12 of which were required to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He hiked 97 miles and camped 64 nights. He attended the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort AP Hill, Virginia. He camped and hiked at Camp Trexler Boy Scout Camp, Jonas, and along the Appalachian Trail. He also performed over 140 hours of community service.Shiner has served as a Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide and served as the Troop Webmaster. Shiner created the troop website at troop-82.com.Shiner's Eagle Court of Award was held on July 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Master of ceremonies was Duane Reichard. He was awarded citations by State Representative Doyle Heffley and State Senator David Argall.Lehighton Mayor Donald Rehrig and July 16, 2011 was proclaimed Zachary Shiner Day in the borough of Lehighton. He was also presented a Good Citizenship award by the Carbon Mountaineers Marine Corps League 996.He is the son of Charles and Jim Shiner of Lehighton. He has a sister, Sara; and grandmothers, Nancy McCarroll of Lehman; and MaryLouise Shiner, Nescopeck, who can proudly say that she has three grandsons who are Eagle Scouts.Shiner will be attending Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre campus in the fall, where he will study mechanical engineering.
