Ownership of playground is discussed in Lower Towamensing

Could Lower Towamensing Township eventually convey its portion of the Aquashicola Playground to the Aquashicola Fire Company?

The matter came up for discussion after resident Robert Kester asked the township's board of supervisors on Tuesday if there were any new developments with regard to the playground.Kester said his question stemmed from last month's decision by supervisors to have township solicitor Jim Nanovic handle all matters associated with the playground.Nanovic said that while there were no new developments concerning the playground, supervisors planned to go into executive session following its meeting regarding real estate. After the meeting, Nanovic said the township owns about 8,000 square feet of the playground, while the fire company owns the other roughly 16,000 square feet.Contacted Tuesday evening, fire company President Rory Koons said the fire company has had some dialogue with the township over the situation."Our intentions are to retain the property," Koons said. "We want to see it continue to be a playground."Koons said, "I think we want to work together on it. Our goal is to see them get a grant and enhance the playground."In other business, supervisors:• Agreed to sell its 1996 GMC bucket truck to Tim Strohl in the amount of $2,000.• Agreed to appoint Nanovic to take lead for the advertisements of, and assisting the township's zoning officer and engineer on, the new zoning and Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) requirements.• Rejected the AT&T plans to erect a cell tower in the township based on the review of a letter dated Feb. 16, 2011.• Accepted the resignation of Louise Koons as the township's representative on the Palmerton Area Library's board of directors. Supervisors said they would send her a letter of thanks for her time served.• Agreed to appoint Robin Suarez to replace Koons as the township's representative on the library's board of directors.• Adopted a resolution for local taxes to have township secretary and treasurer Christine Wentz serve as the township's authorized representative to make requests upon and receive any and all tax information and records from Berkheimer related to the taxes from the clients to be used for official purposes.• Announced that trick or treat night will be held in the township from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 29.
