Man pleads to simple assault, sexual assault charges dropped

A White Haven man, whose case has had 26 continuances and dates back to 2016, entered a guilty plea on Monday in Carbon County court to one count of simple assault while 16 counts involving sexual-assault related charges were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office.

Paul David Weaver, 62, entered his plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika. He admitted becoming angry with a then 14-year-old female and threatening to assault her.

The Kidder Township Police Department arrested Weaver in August 2016, charging him with two counts of rape; statutory sexual assault; three counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault; four counts of aggravated indecent assault; and endangering the welfare of a child, in addition to four counts of indecent assault.

Police said the incidents took place with a then 14-year-old girl from August 2015 to April 2016.

Prosecutors said Monday that the plea agreement in which 12 felony counts were dropped in favor of the misdemeanor two charge was approved by the victim and her family.

Defense attorney Brian Collins said the plea deal was an appropriate resolution of the case.

Matika placed Weaver on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the victim, make restitution of $1,000 to the victim’s compensation board, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
