Elks demolition project cost decreases $7K

Nearly $7,000 is coming back to Carbon County from a demolition project in Lansford.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved a change order with Northeast Industrial Services of Shamokin, decreasing the final contract $6,927.20 for a new total of $138,820.80. The contract is for the demolition of the former Elks building, which was torn down in May.The board said that the decrease in the contract price was because on the advice of the engineer, the contractor was allowed to use some of the fill from the demolition as backfill and also leave the foundation to maintain the safety and integrity of the adjacent buildings. In May, Bob Silver approached the board of commissioners to ask why this was done when it was not what the contract specified. At the time, the commissioners said they would discuss the matter with the Carbon County Planning and Development director David Bodnar to see what was going on.In June, Silver approached Lansford's board about the demolition at 6 W. Ridge St. with the same issue.Carbon County chipped in $127,791 in Community Development Block Grant funds for the $145,748 demolition project and hired Northeast Industrial Services to complete the project.Lansford paid the remaining $18,000 for the project. The Elks building had been the point of discussion since September 2015 when Lansford Borough Council said the building had deteriorated to the point of near collapse and should be demolished.
