Two defendants, who previously pleaded to theft-related charges in separate cases, were sentenced on Monday in Carbon County court.

Nesquehoning incidentIan Curtis, 30, of Lansford, was placed in the Intermediate Punishment Program for two years by Judge Joseph J. Matika on a charge of theft by receiving stolen property.He was charged by Nesquehoning police for an incident on Feb. 10, 2016, at the Kovatch Mobile Equipment facility for stealing various items where he was then employed.Matika gave Curtis the IPP (house arrest) term despite his application for the program being rejected by the adult probation office, who cited his prior criminal record and drug addiction problem.Curtis said he has "kicked" his addiction problem and added, "I'm ashamed of what I done."The two years in the IPP will include four months on electronic monitoring. He must also pay restitution of $319.64, render 75 hours of community service and stay off the Kovatch property.Weatherly incidentBryan James Baker, 30, of West Hazleton, and formerly of Weatherly, was sentenced to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of theft, a felony. In a plea bargain a charge of burglary and related counts were dropped.He was arrested by Weatherly police on Jan. 16, 2016, for entering the home of his parents, while they were away, and removing jewelry, a television and other items valued at more than $2,800. Many of the items were pawned in Hazleton to feed a drug habit, Baker said.Baker spent time in an inpatient rehabilitation program for his drug addiction. Along with that time and jail time spent on the charge, he was given credit for 208 days and paroled.Matika also ordered him to render 75 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.Both defendants must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee.
