The Coal Miners Heritage Festival in Lansford is celebrating its 10th year.

This year's event will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundayat the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum on Dock Street. There is no cost for admission.Entertainment includes the Coal Country Express band, 1-4 p.m.; WMGH's Polka Joe Manjack broadcasting live, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; folk musician Van Wagner, strolling the grounds 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; and D.J. Shawn Frederickson.Coal region re-enactors will also be interacting with guests throughout the event.Visitors will have a chance to take an underground tour of the mine, via mine locomotive, for a nominal cost.They can also explore the museum's collection of anthracite mining artifacts, tools and photographs, which is housed in an original 1920s miner's wash shanty.One of the highlights of the event is the coal-shoveling contest. Participants ages 16 and up compete to see who can shovel a pile of coal in the shortest time, with the winners taking home a trophy. The contest begins at 2 p.m.There will be work on display by coal region artists including Jack Savitsky, Joe Evanousky, Scott Herring, Nicholas Bervinchak, Renie Novak, Louise Soloman and Joe Mataconis.Vendors and exhibitors will also be on hand.There will be a demonstration of old-time 'wash day' chores, which were a part of life in the coal patch towns. There will also be exhibits showing Civil War field medicine, coal region beer memorabilia, antique vehicles, coal advertising signs, a mine lokie, and old-time moonshine equipment.The menu includes halupki, halushki, fresh tapped birch beer, cheese steaks, deep fried corn on the cob, funnel cake and more.Children can take part in sack races and other activities, and Buster the Clown will be on hand making balloon animals.The event is made possible with support from the Carbon County Commissioners and the County Room Tax Fund.Vendors can still sign up for the festival.
