Children compete in Blue Mountain Spartan Race
Four hundred children got the chance to earn the title of "Spartan" Saturday at the Spartan Race held at Blue Mountain in Palmerton.
Children raced throughout the day in groups of 50. Those ages 4 to 8 ran a half-mile race, ages 9 to 13 ran a one-mile race and ages 11 to 14 could run a two- mile race.Half-mile competitors started the race running up a hill and hurdling two barricades. Following the barricades they navigated balance beams and crawled through tubes. Competitors then crawled through mud, crawled under two sets of "barbed wire" made of bungee cords, and jumped an overwall. The children then passed a through-wall, threw spears, navigated an A frame obstacle.Mile competitors completed the half-mile course, then had to navigate a slip wall and had to carry sandbags up a hill. The sandbags were followed by kettle bell carries, after which they had to perform burpees before carrying them back to the original station. They then climbed a 45 degree invert wall and a T-Wall.Two-mile competitors completed the half- and full-mile course, then had to perform two laps of the final leg. The final leg involved a six foot fall climb, a farmer's carry, a second sandbag carrying station, a log carry, another six-foot wall and finally a rope climb.Water stations were set out throughout the course to keep participants hydrated. Parents were allowed to join their children for certain legs of the race.
