The group will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday for fun and fellowship.Attendees are reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided. There are minimal yearly dues.Takeout mealThe West End Mission meal for folks in need, served at Our Lady Queen or Peace Church in Gilbert on Thursdays from 4:40 to 5:45 p.m., is a takeout meal this week as well as through the rest of the month of June.Other meals usually held at the church will not be happening this month.Medical marijuanaThe Eldred Township Planning Commission has been reviewing the new Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Law (Pa. 2016 Medical Marijuana Law) to determine if Eldred needs to address the new law in its ordinances. The regional group, CJERP, (Chestnuthill, Jackson, Eldred, Ross and Polk) is also reviewing the law to see if this should become a regional use.At the next Planning Commission meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, there will be opportunity for public comment on this issue. Breakfasts for the church family will resume again in September.At the 11 a.m. worship service, the children and teachers of Sunday school and Body Building will be celebrating what has been learned about Christ and those who are to be promoted to the next level will be recognized.Air showThe West End Wings Model Airplane Club of Effort will be holding its 39th Annual Father's Day Air show on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the group's airfield in Chestnuthill Township.This annual event features a variety of remote control model aircraft including Piper Cubs, jets, military and sport planes and helicopters. Special attractions include flying race cars and a flying lawn mower. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.Other activities include remote control airplane races and a children's glider-throw contest. There will be a candy drop for the children from the sweet Agri Duck plane. Refreshments and baked goods will be available for purchase.Bring a chair and enjoy the afternoon of flight activities. All skill levels can participate.At 7 p.m. Tuesday, it's a crochet class. Drop-ins are welcome and all skill levels are invited. The class is free, but donations are appreciated.From 9 to noon June 24, it's time for another children's reading session. The Thrift Store is open at that time so adults can keep busy looking for needed items there.Women's ClubThe Western Pocono Women's Club will present its 2017 scholarships to two graduating seniors from Pleasant Valley High School at the Monday club meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. and is held at Effort UMC. Noel Kelly of Saylorsburg will receive the $500 GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of James and Maria Kelly and will be attending DeSales University.Livia Mackes of Kresgeville will receive the $500 GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club Jacqueline Sue Coleman Scholarship. Livia is the daughter Greg and Shannon Mackes. She will be attending Moravian College. These two young ladies have demonstrated outstanding character and academic achievement.The ladies of WPWC welcomed two new members at their May 17 banquet. Linda Holms and Michele Haydt, both of Kunkletown, were initiated as members.Besides the scholarship awards, members will be making plans for the 2017-2018 club year, which starts on July 1.They will also begin gearing up for their annual food stand at the 96th Annual West End Fair to be held Aug. 20-27 in Gilbert, including homemade soups, roast beef sandwiches and strawberry shortcake.Hole-in-oneFrom the Indian Mountain Ladies Golf League, in Kresgeville, comes exciting news.At last Thursday's league, Tracy Applegate from Jim Thorpe had a hole-in-one on No. 8 using an 3 wood club. It was Tracy's first week back to the league after a serious broken elbow injury.Witnessing her hole-in-one were Wanda Murphy Smith, Bonnie Spaventa and Shirley Sterner.Volunteers soughtPVEN is in need of volunteers to plant and keep its garden happy. PVEN grows and provides fresh vegetable to those in need in the West End.
