Three defendants in pending criminal cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Thursday before Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Bad checkMichael Paul Kalinoski, 33, of Saylorsburg pleaded to one count of bad check with theft-related charges dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.Kalinoski was charged by Franklin Township police for an incident in which he took money from a womanto do work at her home and never did the work. When she confronted him about the money she gave him, he wrote her a check that was later returned for insufficient funds. He never made good on the check.Kalinoski is currently an inmate in the Northampton County prison facing a probation revocation proceeding.Serfass questioned the probation recommendation since Kalinoski was under supervision when he committed the crime. Serfass said, "Why should I consider supervision when he did this while on supervision?"Defense Attorney Rory B. Driscole said his client has learned his lesson, having spent time in jail on other charges and is facing a possible prison term in Northampton County.After some consideration, Serfass placed Kalinoski on probation for 36 months and ordered he make restitution tothe victim for $437.50 and render 100 hours of community service.Drug chargesSamantha Lee Goodhile, 20, of Weissport, entered guilty pleas in two pending drug cases. She pleaded to a total of three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on the first case on March 18 in the 100 block of South Second Street by Lehighton police. The second arrest occurred on June 30 when Lehighton police took her into custody on a warrant and found drug paraphernalia on her. In that case she pleaded to two counts of possession of paraphernalia.Goodhile admitted to having drug issues. She said at times she has been homeless and living under the bridge in Weissport. She also said she is getting counseling while in the prison.Her grandmother asked the court to place her in an inpatient rehabilitation facility, stating she needs that kind of help or she will "kill herself on drugs."On the first case Serfass sentenced her to time-served (66 days) to one year in jail.On the second case on the two counts he placed her on probation for a year on each count running consecutive to each other and consecutive to the first case. He also ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, render a total of 150 hours of community service, zero tolerance for drug use and must submit a preparole plan before she can be released from custody detailing where she will live when released.Gun incidentKevin Gregory O'Neill, 48, of Bethlehem, pleaded to one count of firearms not to be carried without a license.He was arrested on April 12 by Palmerton police who responded to the Convenience Food Market at 643 Delaware Ave., for a suspicious person. On scene officers found O'Neill in a vehicle. A consent search was made, and found was a 9 mm handgun which he did not have a license to carry.Serfass sentenced him to time-served (two days) to one day less 24 months in prison, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 100 hours of community service.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
