Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph G. Groody wants to know why prison staff refused to accept a fugitive captured by Butler Township police on Sunday night.

Police caught the man, wanted in Northumberland County. But when they called the county prison, they were told he could not be housed overnight. Northumberland County deputies would have picked him up the next day.Butler Township police had no choice but to let the man go."Now he's back out on the streets," Groody said at a prison board meeting Wednesday.Warden Eugene Berdanier said he would look into it and find out why that happened.In other matters, the board accepted the resignation of part-time correctional officer Ryan Henning as of July 22.The board also agreed to approve the hiring of four additional part-timers, and to make part-time correctional officer Andrew Phillips fulltime.Also, Berdanier said Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are planned for female inmates."The clearance process is being worked on for a few female instructors to conduct the group meetings, similar to what is in place for the male inmates. I am hopeful AA meetings for the females may begin in August," he said.
