Burglary suspect nabbed in act

A Walnutport man, formerly of Jim Thorpe, was nabbed in the act of breaking into a business in Walnutport.

Walnutport police said an off-duty officer led to the arrest of the suspect, who was identified as Allen Dean Miller Jr., 21, of 22 Main St.According to the police report on July 31 about 11:40 p.m. Officer Jason Nothstein was on his way home when he heard audible burglar alarm sounding at the Blue Ridge Service Center located at 308 S. Best Ave. Nothstein contacted Officer Dean Heffelfinger, who was on duty, and requested he respond to the premises. The officers conducted a search of the building after finding a side door had been kicked in.Walnutport officers were assisted by both Slatington and Lehigh Township police during the incident. The assisting officers were requested to check other businesses in the area along SR145. Officer Salvatore Taibi of Slatington observed activity behind the Valley Pizza business, at 506 Old Main St. Upon checking the premises he observed a white male in the rear area of the building holding a shovel. The individual, later identified as Miller, was taken into custody.Miller was transported to the Walnutport station where he admitted breaking into the Blue Ridge Service Center as well as attempting to gain entry to the Valley Pizza business.He was arraigned before District Judge Diane Marakovits, of Allentown, on burglary and related counts and was committed to the county prison in Easton after failing to post $15,000 bail.
