Summer concerts
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its 11th Annual Summer Concert Series this Thursday with an appearance by Billy T Acoustically, sponsored by LCCC.Concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays throughout the summer months with all events to be held on the platform of the Tamaqua Train Station.Additional concerts will be: Aug. 10, Diaspora, sponsored by the Schuylkill County Visitor's Bureau; Aug. 17, Greater Than 2, sponsored by St. Luke's; Aug. 24, Christopher Dean Band, sponsored by Schuylkill County District Attorney Christine Holman.Tamaqua seniorsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens met July 27 with 46 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and provided the inspirational reading "The Key."Guest speaker E. Franklin Griffiths provided information on a number of topics important to anyone, especially as we age. He suggested options for long-term care, life insurance and selecting someone for power of attorney.Refreshments were provided by Penny Schlorf.The group is open to anyone 55 or older.Meetings are held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St., although the Aug. 3 meeting has been canceled.Movie nightAs the new school year approaches, the free movie night program at the East End Playground will be coming to an end. The East End Park Association has two more free movie nights scheduled for its 2017 summer program.The "Smurfs" movie will be presentedat approximately 8:30 tonight.The final movie, which hasn't been determined, will be shown on Aug. 19.Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. The refreshment stand will be open at 7 p.m.The park is located on Mountain Avenue.Soup socialThe next monthly Community Soup Social at Trinity United Church of Christ will be held on Aug. 5. The social will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the social hall.The meal is free to the public and everyone is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends.For more information, or to volunteer, stop by the church, 22 Lafayette St., or call 570-668-4139.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.Activities for next week include: Tuesday, prayer gathering at 8:30 a.m.; Thursday, worship team meets at 7 p.m., worship team leaders meet at 8 p.m.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley.
