Monroe man is charged with stealing $400K

A Monroe County man already serving 18 months in federal prison for conspiring to sell methamphetamine has been charged with stealing nearly $400,000 from his elderly mother.

Scott Borushak, 53, of Hamilton Township, was acting as power of attorney for his 81-year-old mother when he wrote 92 checks totaling $286,762 from one bank and 19 checks totaling $102,147.In total, $389,000 was taken from accounts from September 2015 until September 2016.According to court records, Borushak unlawfully replenished the accounts with annuities and insurance policies belonging to his mother's late husband and his sister.Last week, charges were filed against Borushak by Detective Marie Orlando of the Monroe County Office of the District Attorney.Charges include theft by unlawful taking or disposition, theft by deception and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.He's serving his drug-dealing sentence at the federal prison in Canaan.Authorities say his mother is in an assisted living facility and has a number of health issues.
