Fair offers demolition derby, music, animals

Tires were punctured, political statements were made, and laughs were had at the garden tractor demolition derby on Wednesday night at the Carbon County Fair.

Competitors operated modified and decorated garden tractors in the main arena, ramming into other competitors' tractors, disqualifying each other one by one. The event began at 7 p.m. in the main arena."It's a packed house tonight," said Bob Silliman, president of the Carbon County Fair Board. "We had a slow Monday night because of the weather, but last night we made up for it, and there's even more tonight."Tonight's the garden tractor derby, but tomorrow we've also got the kid's power car derby as well. They like to start at an early age."Silliman also credited musical acts with the fair's increasing nightly success. On Tuesday night audiences at the main stage were treated to a performance by Ohio Elvis Presley impersonator Ryan Pelton. On Wednesday night, crowds heard Georgette Jones, daughter of the late country legend George Jones.Jones was accompanied on stage by the Cramer Brothers, who backed Jones' country music set."Tonight I'm going to sing some of my mom's songs and my dad's songs," Jones said after her grand entrance. "And if you don't mind, I may throw in some of my own songs in there as well."Jones recounted stories during her performance as well. Her second number in her set was from her mother, Tammy Wynette. Jones told the story of how her mother searched door-to-door for a record deal before hitting it big with "Apartment No. 9" in 1966.Wednesday also saw the 4-H cattle competition at the fair. Entrants from both 4-H and the community entered their dairy and beef cows for competition and were judged on qualities such as showmanship, grooming, size, color and cleanliness of the cows.Hunter Highland was named Grand Champion for both fitting and showmanship in the breeding beef category while Jesse Fogel took the title for polled Hereford heifer calves. Fogel's brother Andy was named Grand Champion for fully grown polled Hereford heifers and Highland's belted Galloway took home the title of Supreme 4-H Beef Heifer of Show.
