Lansford Mayor James Romankow sounded somewhat perplexed on Wednesday when he spoke during a meeting of Lansford Borough Council about the ongoing problems with illegal drug use in the area.

He said although improvements have been made in the past few years in Lansford, the problem still exists."We're never going to win," he said. "This is a fight that's going to go on for a real long time."Romankow also feels that the state Attorney General's office has abandoned not only Lansford, but all of Carbon County in the fight against drugs."They abandoned us," he said of the Attorney General's office. "Carbon County very much has a drug issue (the AG's office) doesn't seem to care."The issue arose when one woman complained that someone is taking photos and videos of drug operations around the community.Although the mayor was uncertain on the status of such videos, he said surveillance is occurring but it is very difficult to apprehend drug dealers.He said he has been with the police on drug complaints as well as when they picked up needles and other items related to drug use."It would be awesome if we could point to someone and say 'he's a drug dealer.' It doesn't work that way," Romankow said.He urged people suspecting drug activity to continue calling the police and providing information, noting that surveillance does occur where there is suspicious activity.
