Rush Township hopes to receive a drug and alcohol grant for its police department.

On a unanimous measure, the township's board of supervisors on Thursday agreed to have the township police chief apply for a Community Drug Abuse Prevention Grant Program through the Office of the Attorney General.Contacted Friday morning, township police Chief Joseph Lipsett said the grant is to educate the public, especially children, on preventions of substance abuse, the help and development of expanding community groups dedicated to fighting alcohol and drug abuse, and to facilitate innovative, age-appropriate drug and alcohol programs.The grant is $1,000, and the township would have to put up about 10 percent, which equates to about $100, Lipsett said."What we're going to do with that is we're going to purchase through the grant a fatal vision alcohol program kit for kids," Lipsett said."It's an educational-type thing, that targets the audience between the ages of 6 to 21 years old."Lipsett said it shows the physical functioning that occurs while being under the influence."We'll utilize the surrounding townships and boroughs, set up some kind of course at local fire companies," he said. "It's ingenious, really."Under public comment, resident Bill Boyer once again questioned why Walnut Alley is still barricaded.Board Chairman Shawn Gilbert told Boyer it's barricaded because of the sewer manhole.Boyer asked why other people are driving down the road, but he can't."We barricaded it because of safety concerns", Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said.The board told Boyer his concerns have been noted, but Boyer said he's heard that before."I think you's have it barricaded so I can't use it," he said. "You's are being spiteful."Gilbert previously said the alley is blocked until the township gets a chance to fix the road, as the township has a lot of road projects.Boyer said the township has had it barricaded for two years.Gilbert said that a manhole needs to be repaired.Lastly, it was announced that the township office will be closed on Sept. 4 for Labor Day. That day's garbage pickup will be on Sept. 5, while the Sept. 8 pickup will be Sept. 9.
