As better weather nears, Tamaqua is planning for some upcoming construction projects.

Tamaqua Borough Council voted to amend the proposed Center Street Streetscape program to eliminate one area of Center Street, and instead include the west side of the 100 block, from Spruce Street up to the area near Advanced Auto."We'll take it as far as we can," said borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt.Originally, the plan was to include another part of Center Street. However, the borough has run into issues with highway occupancy permits and the potential elimination of parking in the area.Council is also hoping that the Family Dollar enterprise will complete similar work on their property along Center Street, including the installation of sidewalks and curbing. The work was supposed to be completed with the construction of the facility; however, to date it has not been done. Council is considering suspending the franchise's operating license until the work is completed.Council also discussed how to pay for the repairs to the retaining wall along Lincoln Street. Council is considering moving CDBG funds from 2014 and part of 2015 to potentially pay for the project, rather than using liquid fuel funds.The CDBG funds were originally slated for road work, but Steigerwalt said the liquid fuel funds could be used for those projects instead. Council will need to hold a public hearing and follow the proposal process in order to go ahead with CDBG funding.With the upcoming bridge work being done on West Broad Street, and the proposed detour route being developed, council needs to consider moving a light pole along South Railroad at the intersection with Spruce Street.Mayor Chris Morrison voiced concerns that by moving the pole back from the intersection, it would create a "dark corner," adding that the light has been a relatively new addition to that intersection.
