A concession stand crisis is brewing for Tamaqua's Bungalow Park. Council was alerted recently that the previous vendor will not be able to fulfill their contract and has backed out of the agreement for the upcoming season.

Councilman Dan Evans, head of the recreation and youth committee, said, "I do not have good news on this front. I have not been able to secure anyone else at this point for the 2017 season."Evans, citing the facility as "first rate" said that despite the tight window to find a vendor by opening day, June 2, he is hopeful the borough will be able to find someone to operate the stand.Councilman Brian Connely asked what alternatives the borough would have if a vendor cannot be found."Basically, you're asking if the borough has ever operated the food stand," said Council President David Mace. Members discussed the possibility of staffing the stand and selling something as simple as drinks, hot dogs and Popsicles. The borough will be advertising for a full-time vendor in the meantime, and hopes to have someone in place to vote on the contract at the next regular meeting.Council also hired Emily Bumbulsky as head lifeguard, at a rate of $10 per hour when she is functioning as pool manager, filled two clerical positions and hired 10 lifeguards. Mace said this is about half the staff the pool needs to operate, and the borough is still accepting applications.The pool's opening date will remain June 2, despite changes extending the school year by one day. Pass applications are currently available at the borough building, the Tamaqua Public Library, and several other locations throughout the community. Borough manager Kevin Steigerwalt said applications received by April 28 will be available for opening day.Community Development Director Mary Linkevich requested approval to apply for grants to fund a feasibility study for the pool and park area. In order to pursue other grants from DCNR, the studies are necessary.
