Carbon County's prison is getting a little cramped.

Warden Timothy Fritz told the county prison board on Wednesday that the inmate population was now 251.Of that number, 54 are women."We're a little over 100 percent (capacity)," he said of the current population.That number increases a bit on weekends when inmates who are sentenced to serve weekend sentences come in.He added that the prison has topped the 1,000 mark for admissions so far this year."I think we're going to blow last year's admission numbers out of the water," Fritz said, adding that last year the county prison admitted approximately 1,300 inmates.This year, he expects to reach over 1,500."We're averaging about four to five admissions a day," he said.The prison board asked if there was any specific reason for the number of daily admissions, but Fritz said no one thing has been pinpointed since it ranges from new charges to parole violations to warrants for failures to appear.The spike in population is cyclical throughout with sharp spikes and then decreases at the Broad Mountain facility.In December, Fritz reported to the prison board that the total inmate population was 197, but has steadily increased since then.No additional discussion on the matter was held.In other matters, Fritz said that the prison is currently looking at getting mutual aid agreements with Kuhn's and George Transportation in place in case the prison ever needs to be evacuated due to a natural disaster, fire or other emergency.He said both bus companies are willing to provide buses and drivers, as long as the prison provides security on the buses.The county must now write up an agreement to formalize the action.
