Quilts of Valor members thank veterans at Brookmont

A special presentation was made recently to honor veterans at Brookmont Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Effort.

Members of the Pocono Mountain Chapter 88526 Quilts of Valor presented quilts and certificates to 13 veterans who are patients at Brookmont Healthcare.

Everett Shaver, commander of American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, thanked the veterans and guests gathered in the Harmony Dining Room and introduced the Quilts of Valor.

“We’re honored to have the Quilts of Valor here today,” Shaver said. “These ladies come to our Legion every month. Today, we’re having them recognize our veterans here at Brookmont.”

Quilts of Valor members Laura Flaherty, Kathleen McCarthy, Barbara Rodgers, and Ellen Genaro presented a quilt and a certificate to each recipient.

“These quilts that we are giving you are an expression of our gratitude, meant to comfort you and to thank you for your service, sacrifice, and service to our nation,” Flaherty said.

Flaherty explained that each quilt has three layers. The top layer represents the community, made up of various colors and designs.

The second layer is batting, representing warmth, the “warmth from our hearts,” Flaherty said.

The bottom layer is there for strength and represents the “support that we have and that we need.”

Flaherty also thanked Eileen McGuire, chaplain at Brookmont who helped coordinate the program.

Quilts of Valor is a national organization, of which the Pocono Mountain Chapter 88526 is part.

“Over the past five months, we have presented at four area nursing homes,” explained Barbara Rodgers.

Anyone can nominate a veteran to receive a quilt. Presentations can be done individually or in groups.
