Northern Lehigh registers upset win over Palisades

Northern Lehigh has spent this season finding new ways to make history.

Wednesday brought another.

The Bulldogs turned their first District 11 Class 2A playoff appearance into a victory, scoring three first-half goals and holding off Palisades 3-2 in the boys soccer quarterfinals.

For first-year head coach Jay Ohland, it was another milestone in a season already filled with them.

“Absolutely,” Ohland said when asked if the victory was especially meaningful to him. “It is a massive moment for the program. Getting a win at the 2A level is a great achievement.

“To see some of these guys grow in the program and new talent coming up the last two years is amazing!”

The sixth-seeded Bulldogs got two goals and an assist from Michael Bauer, while Kellen Bauer added a goal. Goalkeeper Gus Rosario recorded 10 saves against the third-seeded Pirates.

While acknowledging the Bauer brothers’ contributions throughout the season, Ohland emphasized that the Bulldogs’ success has been built on a collective effort.

He also pointed to Keelin Moore, Chase Moyer, Onward Charles and Ryan Barchini as consistent contributors.

“Obviously, they are two talented players who present matchup problems,” Ohland said of the Bauers. “But soccer is such a team game and we have talent throughout the lineup. I cannot stress the importance of the team and the team mentality that we have.

“This was a total team effort. Every player who stepped on the field played a huge role in the victory.”

Northern Lehigh established its advantage with an aggressive first-half performance, building a three-goal lead before Palisades scored late in the half.

“The first half performance was one of our best of the season,” Ohland said. “We came out with a high level of intensity and put on the pressure from the start.

“We had a few chances that we didn’t convert, but then we broke through in a big way. We lost focus for a split second and conceded at the end of the half that gave them a lifeline.

“We soaked up a bunch of pressure in the second half, but held firm enough.”

The Bulldogs’ ability to withstand that pressure reflected the mentality Ohland believes has helped carry them through a season of significant accomplishments.

“One of the things I am most proud of is our mentality,” Ohland said. “We are a team that keeps positive, gives their all, and fights to the end.

“And that has resulted in a series of phenomenal events, culminating with our first-ever tie with Northwestern. Qualifying for the Colonial League playoffs for the first time in school history and clinching an above .500 record is a testament to every single player. They put the work in and the positive attitude throughout tough times.”

Northern Lehigh will face seventh-seeded Wilson, which upset second-seeded Pine Grove 3-0, in Tuesday’s (Nov. 3) semifinals at a site to be determined.

Regardless of how far the Bulldogs advance, Ohland hopes his players appreciate what they have already accomplished.

“Obviously, we’d like to push on and keep things going, but no matter what I hope the boys can look back with pride on what they have accomplished,” Ohland said. “I know I will.”

BULLDOG BITES … Northern Lehigh made its first district playoff appearance since consecutive trips to the Class 1A bracket in 2022 and 2023. In 2023, the Bulldogs defeated Williams Valley 10-1 in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Moravian Academy 1-0 in the semifinals.
