Hickory Run plans escape room Nov. 6-15

How do I get out of here? That’s the question you’ll be asking at the Hickory Run State Park escape room. In an effort to have visitors have some fun and learn park information an escape room will be set up at the park Nov. 6-15.

The park chapel will be the location for the escape room.

The chapel was rebuilt after a flood in what was then the town of Hickory Run in the mid-1800s. It then became a one-room schoolhouse. Currently the chapel is rented for events such as weddings.

Alexis Weber, environmental education specialist, spearheaded the escape room after attending a training for park staff about escape rooms.

Weber said, “We want to highlight how the past choices affect the present and why it’s important to be aware of what’s going on in your area.”

The ability to escape will be based on knowledge of the park’s history.

Reservations are being taken for the escape room, which will be done in one hour increments with up to eight people in each time slot. Sign up can be done online through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources by choosing “Hickory Run State Park” or calling the park at 272-806-6192. It is open to all ages, but preteen and up as optimal. Brush up on your park knowledge and be prepared to escape.

The park is looking for donations of items, including old-school lanterns, old picture frames, wooden storage crates, old rugs, curtains, old tools and books to use in the escape room. Roll top desks and office chairs as well as floor and desk lamps are needed. The more beat up the better as it will fit the time period. Weber said, “Support has been amazing.” Contact the park through Facebook messenger if you have items to donate or call 272-806-6192.

Everyone is encouraged to continue to see what events are happening at the park as there are year-round events posted on Facebook and DCNR.
