North Schuylkill ends Pleasant Valley’s season
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — The North Schuylkill girls soccer team held a decisive edge in nearly every phase of Tuesday’s District 11 Class 3A quarterfinal playoff match, making for a difficult night against a determined Pleasant Valley squad.
Scoring in bunches and from all over the field, the Spartans rolled past the Bears 8-1 at Spartan Stadium on Gosch Orthodontics Field, ending Pleasant Valley’s season.
One of North Schuylkill’s top players, Abby Smith, capitalized on a loose ball from the left side and found the back of the net just 35 seconds into the match. The talented sophomore midfielder gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead before many fans had settled into their seats.
The early goal was only the beginning for North Schuylkill, whose long-range shooting ability has become a trademark.
Coach Dave Reeder refers to his squad as having plenty of “strong legs” capable of scoring from distance, and he wasn’t exaggerating.
North Schuylkill fired shots from all over the field, ranging from 15 to 35 yards out. Its willingness to share the ball helped produce goals from four different players.
Abby Urban had a big night, scoring twice before halftime. After Smith’s early goal, North Schuylkill didn’t score again until 23:35 remained in the first half.
Urban scored to make it 2-1, then struck again from 35 yards out with 14:13 remaining. Mylee Bindie followed with the first of her three goals with 12:55 left in the half to extend the advantage. Urban’s second goal came with 1:27 remaining before intermission.
The Bears briefly slowed the momentum when Bailey Clifford scored with 9:33 left in the first half. The junior’s goal gave Pleasant Valley hope and helped keep the Bears in the fight.
“We had a good moment there, and we showed a lot of heart at times with such a young group of players,” Pleasant Valley coach Tara Hyland said. “Our girls worked hard. They never gave up.”
North Schuylkill wasn’t content with its early lead.
“The girls came out with the attitude they were going to come out of here with a ‘W,’” Reeder said.
The Spartans’ objective was clear.
“(We) wanted to make them back-pedal from the get-go,” Reeder continued. “The girls stayed on top of it and played an excellent game. ... It was the best game we’ve played all season.”
With scoring threats throughout the lineup, North Schuylkill continued to apply pressure in the second half.
Mia McDonald scored twice after halftime, while Bindie added another long-range goal and completed her hat trick with 2:02 remaining.
“Things didn’t go their way ... it happens,” Hyland said while focusing on the positives. “They’re a young team. They had three freshmen in the back line. It was a great experience for them being in the playoffs for the first time under the lights. They’ll learn from it.”
LAST HURRAH ... Five seniors played their final game for Pleasant Valley: Ariana Britto, Bianca Arce, Shannon Calhoun, Marta Perry and Juliissa Nieto.
ROUND II ... North Schuylkill advances to the District 11 Class 3A semifinals, where the No. 3-seeded Spartans will face No. 2 Northern Lehigh on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Northern Lehigh. Top-seeded Blue Mountain received a first-round bye and will face No. 4 Southern Lehigh, which defeated No. 5 Bangor 6-1.
