Salisbury shuts out Blue Raiders

SALISBURY TOWNSHIP — Tamaqua traveled to Salisbury High School Monday night looking to extend its season by earning a spot in the District 11 Class 2A quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Falcons were able to get a first-half goal and then add on in the second half for a 4-0 win over the Blue Raiders that ended their season.

Salisbury came out being the aggressor and was able to put a lot of pressure on goalie Jakin Tamagini, who was called on to make five saves in the first half.

On one trip down the right side of the field, Salisbury’s Brian Soita was able to use his speed to get ahead of a defender and put a shot to the far side of the goal.

Tamagini was in a good position to make a play, but the ball sailed just out of his reach and into the side netting for a 1-0 lead.

Over the remaining 24:45 of the first half, Tamaqua started to work some pressure to the other end of the field where Falcons goalie Julian Makhoul was called on to make a pair of saves to keep the Raiders off of the scoreboard. The result was a 1-0 deficit for Tamaqua to make up in the second half.

Salisbury had a corner kick as the midway point of the second half approached and the kick went into a group of players directly in front of the goal.

The Falcons’ Joshua Arias-Evangelista was able to rise up and head the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders looked to become the aggressors in the second half, and with Salisbury now up by two goals, they picked up their intensity even more.

“We were obviously pushing up a little bit, trying to equalize. We went a little aggressive and they have really good speed at the front and may have gotten a little too aggressive and had some breakdowns,” said Tamaqua head coach Pat Blaser.

One of those breakdowns allowed Salisbury’s Daziel Galindo to get around the defense and get Tamagini one-on-one.

Galindo’s shot made it to the back of the goal to put his team up 3-0 with 14:24 left to play.

Salisbury added a late goal to push its lead to four and Tamaqua was unable to get anything past goalie Makhoul, who finished with five saves.

“Their shape is really impressive,” said Blaser. “When we were watching film, the one thing I was really impressed with is how disciplined they are.

“They stay wide, they do a lot of overlapping runs, and they never pack one space, they keep the field wide open.”

HIGHLY REGARDED SENIORS ... Tamaqua has just three seniors on its roster this season and all three were given all-league honors. Forward Brody Schlier was a first-team honoree while defender Evan Temarantz and Tamagini were second-team in the league. With just three seniors, the Raiders were one of the younger teams and featured two freshmen starters and two sophomore starters this season. “With the young players that we have, we’re looking forward to the future,” said Blaser.
