October 24, 1996 — Northwestern’s top cross country runner, Bruce Kite, captures first place at the District 11 Boys Class 2A meet held at Lehigh University. Kite, a senior, turns in a time of 16:34.5 to top runner-up Carmen Yannarella of Palisades by 18 seconds. Northern Lehigh’s Steve Pomicter finishes sixth to qualify for states, while Panther Valley’s Brian Williams also earns a spot at the PIAA meet with a ninth place. Rob Thomas of Jim Thorpe crosses in 14th to also reach states, while Tamaqua — led by Eric Oertner’s 12th place — ends second in the team standings to earn a trip to Bucknell. In the 3A race, Lehighton’s Chad Wentz finishes sixth, but misses states by one place.
