Minersville trims Tams

Raiders fall in Schuylkill quarters

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS – The buzzer sounded late Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium on Gosh Orthodontics Field, signaling the end of the Schuylkill League season for a hard-fighting Tamaqua girls soccer team.

The Blue Raiders were shut out 1-0 by Minersville in the quarterfinal round of the league playoffs.

The game’s only goal came on a dribbler that slipped to the right of the goalkeeper and into the net.

There was nothing fancy about the score. It came from being in the right place at the right time off the foot of aggressive sophomore midfielder/forward Danica Gill.

Gill was the go-to player for the Miners, taking all six of her team’s corner kicks, though Tamaqua’s defense contained her for much of the match.

In the end, this Raiders group showed it has more than promise. They will return to action in next week’s district playoffs, and looking forward could be a league contender in 2027.

That’s what veteran Tamaqua coach Clem McCarroll sees ahead.

Young hardly describes this team. Baby-faced might be more accurate.

Four freshmen and four sophomores started Saturday, and only seniors Mia Bamford, Evelyn Leinbach and standout goalkeeper Sophia Sitlinger will graduate.

“The way we got better towards the end of the season,” proclaimed McCarroll, “is very encouraging for (the program) down the road.”

The Raiders won six straight games to close the regular season, backing up McCarroll’s assessment.

What held Tamaqua back offensively was its inability to generate enough speed to pressure Minersville (13-4-2). The difference showed in the final statistics, with Minersville holding a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Otherwise, the Raiders packed the area in front of the net to help Sitlinger keep the Miners at bay.

“Our defense did an outstanding job, no complaints, we just need more scoring and that will come with experience,” McCarroll pointed out.

Minersville’s speed was evident throughout.

The Miners covered the field well, cut off Tamaqua’s attack by taking smart angles and forced the Raiders toward the sidelines, limiting opportunities to center the ball and create quality scoring chances.

“The defense performed spectacularly, with our main concern checking Joey (Vidzicki) up top,” Minersville coach Nick Parent explained about the Tamaqua freshman forward.

“She was tough, aggressive ... we talked (before) the game knowing where she was at (all time). We just needed to be aware of where she was at.”

Gill’s goal came off a throw-in with 31:33 remaining in the second half.

“Jenna Cullen crossed it in and I just happened to be there. I got my leg up and I hit it in. It was definitely lucky but it was a great play. Sometimes it’s good to just be there,” the sophomore said of her game-winner.

It was all Minersville needed.

Tamaqua (10-8-1) mounted a late surge, producing its best offensive stretch of the game with two strong shots on goal. However, senior goalkeeper Bella Rizzardi made the saves necessary to preserve the shutout and prevent the Raiders from forcing overtime.

McCarroll noted that his team was dealing with several injuries.

“We were down a few starters because (of injuries) and we inserted Isabella Mincavage, a freshman (defender), she got thrown in the fire and played a very strong game for us,” the coach said while praising the young defender.

“Minersville is a good team, we just couldn’t get that breakaway, we had our chances but we never were in sync; we needed that one punch (kick) and dribble to give us a good look.”

Minersville’s quickness effectively neutralized the Tamaqua attack.

The victory was Minersville’s first Schuylkill League playoff win since 2020, and earned the Miners (13-4-2) a matchup with defending champion Blue Mountain (14-2-2) in Tuesday’s semifinal at 5 p.m. at North Schuylkill.

North Schuylkill (10-8-1) will face Schuylkill Haven (12-5-1) in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. after the Spartans blanked Tri-Valley 4-0 in Saturday’s other quarterfinal.

EYES ON DISTRICT ... Tamaqua currently sits eighth in the district rankings and would face the top seed. Right now, that is Northwestern, although things could change based on league champions.
