Frost expected tonight; leaves reaching peak
It’s time to get the winter jackets out of storage.
Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, noted during an interview late Friday morning that today’s weather is going to feel drastically different when people go outside compared to Friday afternoon.
Kines said that the winds are expected to be blowing out of the northwest, which will make for a colder day, with high temperatures barely reaching 50 degrees.
“You’re going to know there’s a small cold front that moved through,” Kines said. “It will be a dramatic change; something we’ve not seen this year, not accustomed to.”
Kines said the “potpourri of weather” will result in today’s afternoon high near 50 degrees, with significant wind blowing during the daytime, which will make conditions feel about 10 degrees lower than what the temperature says.
“The big thing is the wind’s going to be blowing,” he said. “There will be a much drier air mass, a much colder air mass.”
While the winds are expected to diminish by this evening, Kines said there’s a likelihood frost will set in.
He said Sunday will remain on the chilly side, but there will be less wind, and temperatures will get up into the low to mid-50s.
“The big thing is there’s going to be less wind,” Kines said. “It won’t feel as nasty Sunday as it is going to be on Saturday, (though) there’s still a risk of frost Sunday night.”
Once we get past Monday morning, he said “the threat of the frost diminishes quite a bit for probably most of next week.”
Kines said the warming trend will result in high temperatures reaching the 60s, with nighttime lows staying above freezing.
However, he noted there is likely to be a strong storm forming off the southeast coast early next week, which is going to cause a lot of wind along the coastal areas in the southeast and mid-Atlantic, and that the storm could throw some clouds up our way toward the latter half of next week in the form of rain.
“If that storm doesn’t bother us, next week could be a very nice week as far as the weather is concerned,” Kines said. “Either mainly or totally dry, (and there) should be a lot of days of sunshine.”
Fall foliage
According to Pennsylvania’s Fall Foliage Report for the week of Oct. 15-21, “a few cold nights during the last reporting period hastened the color change across many Commonwealth forests. Although recent heavy rain has stripped some leaves, the expected cooldown this weekend will rapidly intensify the transition to vibrant shades across all of Penn’s Woods.
The Monroe/Pike county service forester (Delaware State Forest) said the region is at full peak this week into this weekend as colors abound all over the area, according to the report.
Fall foliage, including the foliage status by county according to the report is as follows:
• Carbon County: Approaching peak.
• Lehigh County: Just staring.
• Monroe County: Peak.
• Northampton County: Approaching peak.
• Schuylkill County: Approaching peak.
