Lansford Mayor Leonard Fredericks said borough council should give serious thought to building a jail in the community, saying it would “help solve many problems in the community.”
He pointed out that presently when violators are taken into custody requiring imprisonment, even for an overnight period, two policemen must escort them to the Carbon County Prison in Jim Thorpe.
“We have nowhere to take these people,” Fredericks said, noting while police make the trip to Jim Thorpe they have to rely on police in the surrounding communities to cover for them.
The old Lansford lockup was dismantled several years ago and that area is now used for storage, Fredericks said.
