Gillespie earns Paul Short title
Jim Thorpe sophomore Logan Gillespie recently added another major accomplishment to her strong cross country season.
Gillespie captured the Girls High School Brown 5K at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University, finishing first in a field of 395 runners from 42 teams.
Gillespie covered the 5K course in 18 minutes, 16.7 seconds, finishing 8.6 seconds ahead of Red Lion senior Gabrielle Houck, who was second in 18:25.3. Wilson junior Juliana Bonham placed third in 18:54.3, followed by Strath Haven sophomore Cayla Gaffney (18:56.5) and Radnor junior Coco Conner (19:01.0).
Jim Thorpe senior Stacy Bos also turned in a strong performance, placing 54th overall in 21:03.
The victory continued an impressive stretch for Gillespie, who less than a week earlier placed third against statewide competition at the PIAA Foundation Cross Country Invitational at Big Spring High School in Newville.
Gillespie finished the Class 2A girls race in 18:53.9. Wellsboro senior Lauren Kosek won the race in 18:08.1, while Somerset senior Emily Fisher was second in 18:47.6.
The two performances are part of a strong sophomore season for Gillespie.
She opened September with a victory in Colonial League competition at JT, running 18:26.3 and finishing nearly a minute-and-a-half ahead of the field.
Gillespie added another invitational victory on Sept. 12 at the Centaur Invitational at DeSales University, where she won the varsity girls race in 19:04.4. North Schuylkill’s Genevieve Dando was second in 19:49.1.
The success follows a freshman season in which Gillespie overcame an extended absence to reach the state meet. Gillespie returned late in the fall.
She placed fifth at the Colonial League Championships before finishing fourth in the District 11 Class 2A race in 20:07.2 to qualify for the PIAA Championships.
Gillespie carried that momentum into the spring, capturing the Colonial League championship in the 3,200 meters with a personal-best time of 11:35.61.
