Lehighton’s Joshua Cathers and Tamaqua’s Aidan Elston both raced to top-10 finishes in the Small School boys division at the Northampton Invitational to highlight Saturday’s local scholastic sports action.

Cathers crossed the finish line fifth in 17:01.20, while Elston placed ninth in 17:14.30 at Bicentennial Park.

In other action, Tamaqua rolled to a shutout victory in girls soccer, while Panther Valley remained unbeaten with a straight-set win over Nativity in volleyball.

Northampton Invitational

Two Times News area boys finished in the top 10 of the Small School division at the Northampton Invitational at Bicentennial Park.

Lehighton’s Joshua Cathers placed fifth in a time of 17:01.20, while Tamaqua’s Aidan Elston crossed in 17:14.30 to take ninth.

The Blue Raiders also had two runners finish in the top 20, as Parker Steencken (17:43.30) took 15th and Memphis Kline (17:46.40) finished 17th, helping Tamaqua place eighth among 16 small schools.

Cameron Gowin finished 41st in 18:36.10 for the Indians.

In the girls race, Lehighton’s Grace Cathers, Anna Hawk and Claudia Pagotto all turned in top-20 finishes to help the team place sixth. Cathers finished 14th in 22:01.10, barely edging teammate Hawk, who was 15th in 22:01.50. Pagotto crossed in 22:12.80 to place 17th.

Tamaqua’s Peyton O’Brien finished 33rd in 23:03.70, while Palmerton’s Lillian Fox placed 35th in 23:17.60. The Bombers’ Sophia Cornmesser was 38th in 23:21.30.

Pen Argyl tallied two goals in the third quarter to edge Lehighton, 2-1, in Colonial League action.

Isabella DeCesare and Ella Bonatz both scored for Pen Argyl, while Quinn Lichtenwalner had the lone goal for Lehighton.
